The brief

During handball matches, actions take place at high speed and referees have to react quickly and accurately. Because of the major impact their decisions have on the course of the match, it has become essential for the National Handball League to equip itself with advanced technologies. The objective was to select an innovative and scalable video replay system to carry out this ambitious project, and succeed in creating interaction between the referees and the public so that decisions are better understood.

The deployed solution

The NHL has chosen the VOGOSPORT ELITE solution as a video replay and audio communication system for referees. During the match, referees can communicate with each other using the VOKKERO ELITE system, and view the available camera angles on the touch screen positioned at the edge of the pitch. They can then mark an event and review it from every possible angle to make the right decision. Thanks to the VOGOSPORT ELITE solution, the television can broadcast live the images that are reviewed by the referees, as well as the sound from their microphones, so that viewers can better understand their exchanges and decisions. At the end of each match, all the camera angles are synchronised with the referees’ audio communications and uploaded to a secure VOGO Cloud. Each referee and observer can then access all the matches via their personal space to carry out analyses and produce educational content for referee training.

The result

Calmer and more precise refereeing

As referees do not have much time to make a decision, they can now officiate more serenely with VOGO solutions, which reassures clubs and reduces the likelihood of refereeing errors.

Improving referee performance

Equipped with VOKKERO ELITE devices, referees can simplify their communication and improve their performance thanks to post-match analysis made possible by the VOGO Cloud.

Harmonisation of arbitration skills

The VOGOSPORT ELITE solution has been deployed on Liqui Moly Starligue pitches, enabling referees to work with the same Video Replay tool. The VOGOSPORT ELITE solution is used for all competitions organised by the EHF. The French referees are perfecting their mastery of this tool to perform even better.

“The ambitious project we are going to roll out goes beyond traditional video refereeing. Proximity and links with our audiences are part of our DNA. They should inspire us to adopt an approach that’s very important to us: helping players, coaches and managers to accept better refereeing decisions through verification of a phase of the game, while at the same time considering our audiences, introducing some of them to the game and providing others with more information.”
