Eiffage Rail is a subsidiary of the Eiffage Group, a major player in European civil engineering and infrastructure. Specialising in the construction, modernisation, and maintenance of railway infrastructure, the company operates on large-scale national projects, adhering to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and operational performance.
Among its core activities, ‘high-output track renewal‘ operations hold a strategic position. These involve renewing several kilometres of track within an extremely tight timeframe, mobilising large teams of operatives and heavy plant. In this environment, coordination and communication between teams are essential to ensure project success and to protect workers exposed to noise levels that can exceed 95 dB.
The Challenge
The Site Manager sought to equip his teams with a robust and reliable communication solution that would provide appropriate hearing protection while ensuring seamless communication between operatives.
The key objective was to enhance safety while optimising coordination, using a system that is both simple to deploy and intuitive for daily use.
The rapid onboarding of new starters was also a key requirement, ensuring they could become immediately operational alongside existing, highly experienced teams.
The deployed solution
To validate the suitability of the solution, a trial phase was conducted on-site under real-world conditions. VOGO supported Eiffage Rail throughout this pilot, providing equipment to the teams over several days and maintaining an on-site presence to answer questions and address any concerns. The system’s ease of use, rapid setup, and long battery life allowed the teams to work continuously without any communication dropouts. The operatives were equipped with VOKKERO GUARDIAN intercoms, which provide both effective hearing protection and clear, hands-free, instantaneous communication. Every operative was able to get to grips with the equipment easily during the briefing, simply picking up their radio and headset before heading to their workstation.
The result
Enhanced safety
The deployment of VOKKERO GUARDIAN systems has strengthened team cohesion and streamlined communication between operatives, even in environments with extreme noise levels. Teams were able to keep their hearing protection on at all times while communicating naturally and effortlessly. This contributed to a significant reduction in the risks associated with the frequent removal of ear defenders.
Operational Efficiency
Operational efficiency has significantly improved thanks to the hands-free mode, which allows operatives to remain focused on their tasks while keeping both hands free for handling tools, operating levers, or working at height. The solution has also streamlined the onboarding of new starters, allowing them to adapt quickly and integrate into well-established teams without any downtime.
Full-scale Rollout
Impressed by the benefits observed on the ground, Eiffage Rail has decided to standardise the use of the VOKKERO GUARDIAN system across all its ‘high-output track renewal’ teams. This ensures reliable, secure, and consistent communication across every worksite.
This standardisation now enables the company to provide every staff member with the same level of performance and protection, regardless of the project location.
